Understanding Organic

Organic refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed; organic food is produced using environmentally and animal friendly farming methods.”

– Canada Organic Trade Association

Products that are labelled as organic must be compliant with the Organic Products Regulations, governed by the Canadian Foods Inspection Agency. The standards and regulations, for both domestic and imported, limit and prohibit on the followings:

  • The use of toxic and persistent pesticides
  • Synthetic fertilizers
  • The routine use of drugs
  • Antibiotics or synthetic hormones
  • Genetic engineering (GMOs)
  • Sewage sludge (biosolids)
  • Irradiation

For that reason, organic products must receive an ongoing care in order to meet the standard of organic foods starting from the growers to the shelves at our stores.

For Your Health and Our Environment

Organic foods have become a part of Canadian lifestyle. A report from Canada Organic Trade Association states 66% of British Columbia population purchase organic groceries on a weekly basis. Moreover, Vancouver has the highest number of organic consumers in B.C. There are numerous reasons to purchase organic products. They can be summarized into 2 groups:

Good for your health

Due to the fact that organic foods come from the farming practice that does not utilize synthetic fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides, genetic engineering, growth hormones, or irradiation; organic foods would consider a much healthier option.

Good for our environment

Organic farming practice helps improve the overall well-being of the ecosystem including land (soil), water, air, and living beings. The practice plays a big part in the reduction of energy and pollution incurred from agricultural activities.
