Peaches are the most popular of all the stone fruits and one of the most popular of all the fruit during the summer. They’re at their peak from June to the end of August…but depending on where they’re grown, the season does extend before and after this time period.

How to Select the Perfect Peach

Look for firm peaches with a pleasant aroma. Avoid peaches with excessive shriveled skin as that is a sign of dehydration and may lead to an unpleasant texture. You can also give your peach a little sniff at the store to make sure it has a pleasant, peach-like aroma.

Other helpful tips include:

1.  Pick full-coloured peaches

2.  Select larger-sized fruit

3.  Opt for ‘Tree-Ripened’ fruit

YELLOW PEACH varieties

Yellow peaches are the quintessential peach. They are distinguished by their fuzzy thin skin with hues of red, pink and gold blushing throughout. They are often identified as a traditional “true” peach, meaning the fruit exudes a classic peach flavor.

Redhaven

This freestone variety has an almost fuzz-less, bright red skin, and a bright yellow flesh that is does not brown. It’s an excellent peach for canning and freezing. 

Starfire

Recognized for its bright red skin and clear yellow, non-browning flesh, the Starfire is another of the freestone peach varieties which is known for both its flavor firmness.

Blazing Star

The Blazing Star is a round, medium-large sized freestone peach. Its skin is predominantly red with a yellow, firm, sweet, and non-browning flesh—which makes it an ideal peach for both slicing and grilling. 

GloHaven

The Glo Haven is a freestone peach that features a dark red skin colour and, at times, a red tiger-stripe colouring.  Known for its incredible flavor, this peach is very sweet and juicy—making it perfect for snacking as well as baking, freezing and canning. 

Cresthaven

The Crest Haven is a freestone peach is a medium-sized peach featuring unique deep yellow colour, with a tomato-orange blush. Known for their edible qualities, the Cresthaven is ideal for freezing, baking, canning, and most of all, eating fresh.

O’Henry

A classic variety, this very large, freestone peach is known for its exceptional flavor and firm flesh. It has a signature orange-yellow base almost entirely enveloped in a dark red blush.  

White Peach Varieties

Unlike their yellow-fleshed cousins, white-fleshed peaches boast a creamy pinkish-white flesh that is sweeter to taste and low in acidity.

Pink moon

The Pink Moon is an exceptionally large peach and is the only variety that can be eaten hard while being sweet and juicy at the same time. It’s a definite favourite of those that are fans of ‘crunchy fruit’.

white lady

This freestone peach is high in sugar with a mellow, very sweet flavor.  It features a large fruit with light blush-red skin and flavourful white flesh. Their low acidity and sweetness make them ideal for canning preserving, and baking.   

snow king

This medium sized freestone peach is one of the more colourful of the white peach varieties; it features a skin that’s predominantly deep-red over white.  It’s known for the longevity of the fruit and its firmness—which makes it a favourite in the farmers market.

In addition to being a delectable summer snack, Peaches are also rich in vitamin A and, as such, they’re known to offer protection from lung and oral cancers. They contain many vital minerals such as potassium, fluoride and iron. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that help regulate heart rate and blood pressure.
